How to Find the Right Sized Carport Garage for Your Home

When choosing a carport garage for your home, one of the things you need to consider is how big it will be. While garage and carport sellers will recommend a variety of sizes for you to choose from, in the end, the choice is ultimately yours to make since it is, after all, going to be part of your home. What size is best for you when it comes to these carports and garages, and how do you determine what is the perfect one for you?

Here are a few tips on how to choose the right size carport garage for your home:

What fits your vehicle - For starters, the first consideration you need to make is whether or not your vehicle will fit in the carport. Some vehicles may need wider carports while others are fine with smaller ones. If you are unsure what size best fits your current (and possibly future) vehicles, ask the person selling you the carport garage for information on the right size for specific vehicles.

Know what garage dimensions actually mean - One thing you need to keep in mind when choosing the size of your carport garage is that the size you will be quoted will be the measurements of the outside of the garage. This means if you are being sold a garage that measures 14’ x 28’, this is the outside dimensions and not the inside measurement. The interiors of these garages will often be around 6 inches smaller than the outside.

How many cars you have – Carport garages come in choices that include one door and two door options. If you have more than one vehicle, you should get yourself a two-door garage for this. If you have three cars, then a triple door garage may be in order. There are also one-door garages that are long, allowing for two cars to fit in it, but with one in front of the other instead of side-by-side.

The size of your property – Of course you cannot buy a large garage and then not have enough space for it. You will also need to consider the size of the area where the garage is supposed to stand. If you have two vehicles but the space you have is only good for a one-car garage, you might want to consider getting a one-car garage for your first car, and a carport that you can place in front of your home for your second car.

Extra storage space – If you are planning on using your carport garage as additional storage space, apart from being a garage, then you will need to find one that is bigger than what you originally planned. Find a unit that is a few feet wider than your vehicle to ensure that not only do you have enough space to put shelves and cabinets into it but also enough space for you to move around in as well while the car is inside together with your storage facilities.
