Why a Steel RV Carport is Better than a Canvas RV Carport

When choosing a carport for your RV, you will be presented with a number of options for you to choose from. The most common choices you will be made to pick from include carports that come with a canvas roof and covering and one that has steel roofs and sidings. Which one is best for your RV – a steel RV carport or a canvas RV carport?

In terms of cost, a canvas RV carport is more economical because it uses cheaper materials for the
construction. These use steel poles and a few sheets of canvas shaped like the structure for the covering. The canvas can cover not only the roof area of the structure but sometimes covers the poles for added protection from corrosion.

In terms of durability, however, a steel RV carport is your best option. This is because the entire structure is built using highly durable materials such as steel posts, steel support beams, and steel roofing. This all steel construction uses different kinds of steel in a variety of gauges, ensuring that the structure is durable and can withstand changing weather, and winds.

The reason why a steel RV carport is better than one made out of canvas is that these can last longer and will remain intact in strong winds and inclement weather. Canvas shelters may be cheaper but these come with a lot of cons. For starters, when there is heavy rain, there is a tendency for the roofing to droop with the weight of the water. This may cause the roof to tear if the weight becomes too much for the canvas to carry.

Another reason why a steel RV carport is better than one with a canvas cover is these can be anchored safely to the ground, making these more durable. While there are a few RV carports with canvas covers that can also be anchored to the ground with the use of nuts and bolts in concrete, these will never be as durable as steel carports that are anchored in using the same method.

Also worth noting is that steel carports do not burst into flame when exposed to high temperatures and to flame. Steel carports are not flammable and do not go soft when the sun gets too hot. This means a steel RV carport retains its shape no matter how hot the day is.

The lifespan of a steel carport, when compared to a canvas carport, is also exponentially longer than that of a canvas one. Canvas carports can last for at least 3 years with a maximum lifespan of 6 years. Steel carports have a general lifespan of 10 to 20 years, depending on the construction and materials used. Cleaning is also easier with a steel RV carport. Canvas covers on canvas carports need to be removed for proper cleaning since these are too soft for a person to get

up on and pointing a hose to wash dirt and debris off it will only serve to load the top with water, which can make the canvas top sag and even tear. Steel RV carports can be cleaned with a hose and telescopic pole cleaners without fear of the roof sagging and tearing.
